Carleton College Physical Environment
Carleton College is in a small town that is quaint, clean and friendly to students. The town stakes its claim that it’s the “Home of cows, colleges, and contentment.” Northfield has almost no crime and the college students are two to four blocks from all of “downtown.”
This setting appeals to students who are looking for a safe, trendy, artsy environment in which to express their individuality. The commercial part of town is really just one street wide along the river, with lovely old buildings, coffee shops, artisan bakeries, bars and restaurants.
A Carleton professor has opened a waffle bar that claims to be Northfield’s “most green and socially-responsible” restaurant. This is a win-win for Carleton students who want to “take back the earth.” There is a shuttle bus that runs between Carleton, local attractions and another selective college also welcomed by this small tidy town.
